SUSTAINABLE, SANITARY AND EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT OF ANIMAL MANURE FOR PLANT NUTRITION (SUSANE-RESEARCH ( 13/6/2008 )
Financial supported by the Council for Development Research (RUF) Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs The overall objective of SUSANE-research is to enhance the scientific research capacity in Vietnam for developing sustainable management and use of animal manure. Background Animal manure is a valuable source of plant nutrients and a source of spreading of diseases. Further manure is also a potential hazard to the environment. The small producers are increasing their pig production significantly on properties with very little land, this will increase risks for an inefficient use of animal manure, for environmental pollutions and spreading of pathogens.

Objective of SUSANE research

This project, therefore, focus on optimising recycling of animal manure and reducing spreading of diseases at small livestock producers, supported by the Danida programme ASPS. Further the project will contribute to alleviate environmental hazards related to livestock production on large scale commercial farms, which are foreseen to emerge in the near future.

Focus areas of the project

The 3.5 year program of research and training involving collaboration between agricultural research institutes in Vietnam and Denmark aims at developing and validating sustainable manure management systems through research on farm with focus on, 1) Management of manure, collection, storage, transport and application, 2) Optimize timing and precision of manure application and 3) Reduce spreading of pathogens
